What is a NIF?

Your Portuguese taxpayer number.

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal), also called número de contribuinte, is the ID Portugal uses for almost every official transaction: opening a bank account, signing a lease, getting a phone plan, buying property, or starting a visa application. Most internationals discover they need one only once they're already stuck. NIF Online lets you get it sorted from home, before you ever set foot in the country.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What is a NIF and why do I need one?+

The NIF (Número de Identificação Fiscal), also called número de contribuinte, is your Portuguese taxpayer number. You need it for almost anything official in Portugal: opening a bank account, signing a lease, buying property, getting a phone plan, or starting a visa application.

Can I request a NIF if I have never been to Portugal?+

Yes. NIF Online is built specifically for people applying from abroad, with no Portuguese address and no prior residency.

Do I need to visit a notary or get an apostille?+

No. Your power of attorney is recognized by one of our lawyers directly, with no notary and no apostille required. You sign it by hand, scan it, and upload it; our team submits the request to Finanças on your behalf.

What documents do I need?+

A valid passport (or national ID card for EU citizens) and a proof of address issued outside Portugal, such as a utility bill or bank statement.

How long does it take to receive my NIF?+

Once your signed power of attorney and documents are received, we submit your request to Finanças. The official NIF is typically issued within 3-5 business days.

Can I get a NIF number for my child using the same process?+

Yes, of course. If your child is under 18 years old, both parents will need to sign the Power of Attorney. You will also need to provide the child’s birth certificate.

Do I need a fiscal representative?+

Since the rules changed, a fiscal representative is no longer mandatory for most non-residents. It is still required if you have specific ties to Portugal, such as buying property, opening a freelance activity, or setting up a company. We offer fiscal representation as an optional add-on at €100/year. Contact us if this applies to you.

Who is behind NIF Online?+

NIF Online is operated by Smart Relocation, an immigration law firm based in Lisbon that has handled NIF and relocation cases for internationals moving to Portugal.
